Four Warriors on All-League Squad

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills placed four players on the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference women's all-conference soccer teams.

Freshman midfielder Sarah Carver (Cedar Rapids) was named first-team all-conference, sophomore forward Ashley King (Hudson) was chosen for the second team, and sophomore forward Crystal Maldonado (Centerville) and freshman midfielder/defender Kaylie Tuttle (Mystic) were honorable mention selections.

“Sarah Carver came in as a freshman and worked hard in the midfield on both sides of the ball,” said IHCC head coach Doug Seigle. “She will be someone we look to for leadership for next season.”

“Ashley King returned from a knee injury last year to finish this season as our leading scorer, including two goals in the playoffs.”

Of the two honorable mention picks, Seigle said, “Crystal Maldonado and Kaylie Tuttle did a great job for us this season, sacrificing themselves to make the team better by playing any position that we needed because of injuries or adjustments.”

The IHCC women were 5-12-1 and finished the season strong, notching the first-ever postseason win and advancing to the region semifinals for the first time.

“It would have been easy for the women to let up at the end of a long season, but they did a great job of staying focused on our team goals and taking that first step forward as a quality soccer program,” Seigle noted. “Although we were short on numbers, we showed we were a team that did not give up and played with a lot of heart.”

First Postseason Win for IHCC

Bettendorf -- The Indian Hills women's soccer team notched their first-ever postseason win on Tuesday, knocking off Scott CC 4-3 in the first round of the Region 11 postseason tourney. The win for IHCC came just three days after the Warriors and Scott had played to a 1-1 tie in two overtimes in the final regular-season match for both teams.

This time around, after Scott scored first, the Warriors' Amber Goostee knotted the score at 1-all with a goal in the 31st minute with an assist by Sarah Carver.

Early in the second half, Ashley King gave the Warriors the lead with an unassisted goal, but Scott's Melissa Sanchez quickly tied the match just two minutes later.

Crystal Maldonado again put Indian Hills on top when she scored off a pass from Sarah Sosa in the 75th minute. King then scored her second goal of the game for IHCC and that proved to be the game-winner after Carly Allen of Scott tallied in the 88th minute.

Janet Ocho had seven saves for the Warriors in the IHCC goal. Indian Hills had 23 shots in the match, six of those by King, with two of them finding the back of the net.

"It's the program's biggest win, in my opinion," said Indian Hills coach Doug Seigle. "It's nice to see the girls rewarded for their hard work."

The Warriors move on to the second round of the tournament on Saturday when they take on regular-season champion Iowa Western at Cownie Park in Des Moines. IHCC is now 5-11-1 for the season.

IHCC Gets OT Win at Home

Ottumwa -- An overtime goal by Edith Jones allowed the Indian Hills women's soccer team to post a 2-1 win over Iowa Lakes at the Walsh Soccer Complex on Tuesday.

Jones' game-winner came in the match's 103rd minute and evened IHCC's season record at 1-1. The Warriors had lost to Parkland College, 7-0, last Saturday to open the season.

IHCC's first-year head coach Doug Seigle commented on Jones' winning goal. "Edith just happened to be in the right spot at the right time. To score the game-winner I think will help her confidence going into our next game."

Caitlin York had opened the scoring for Indian Hills with a goal in the first half and Iowa Lakes tied the score in the second half.

Abby Donnolly was solid in goal for the Warriors with five saves. IHCC outshot the Lakers 12-8.

Indian Hills is idle until playing at Iowa Western on Sept. 11.

Duea and Gagliardi Sign with 4-Year Schools

Ottumwa -- Five players from last fall’s Indian Hills Community College soccer teams have signed letters-of-intent with four-year schools to continue their education and soccer careers.

From the IHCC men’s team, Ryan Culbertson from Ft. Madison has signed with Grand View University, Aaron Rose from Ottumwa has signed with William Penn University, and Gustavo Scorzelli from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has signed with Judson University.

IHCC women’s players who will play soccer this fall are Brooke Duea from Earlham with Northwest Missouri State University and Caroline Gagliardi from Sao Paulo, Brazil with Florida Memorial University.

Duea led the IHCC women with 11 goals and added five assists in the 2009 season. Gagliardi had a team-high six assists and five goals. Both were named to the All-Region 11 team.

Culbertson was a first-team All-Region selection and Scorzelli was named Honorable Mention.

Youth Soccer Clinic at IHCC

Ottumwa -- Area youth have been invited to attend a soccer clinic that will be held in the Tom Arnold Net Center on the Indian Hills Community College Ottumwa campus on Saturday, March 13. IHCC head soccer coach Kirk Artist and members of the Indian Hills soccer teams will help with the instruction at the clinic.

The clinic for the U-8 and U-10 age groups will start at 8:30am; the U-12 and U-14 age groups will begin at 1pm.

Those who participate will take part in drills for dribbling, passing/receiving, and shooting.

The Indian Hills soccer teams and Ottumwa Soccer Club are teaming up to provide instruction for the clinic.

Indian Hills Has Nine on All-Conference Academic Team

Ottumwa, IA -- Indian Hills placed nine players on the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference All-Academic team. IHCC had six players receive a first-team academic award and three more accorded second-team honors.

Named to the ICCAC All-Academic first team from Indian Hills were sophomores Chelsea Bryant (Darnell, IA) and Caroline Gagliardi (Sao Paulo, Brazil) along with four freshmen -- Abby Donnolly (Mt. Pleasant, IA), Ashley King (Hudson, IA), Stephanie Lopez (Ottumwa, IA) and Cassie Pietz (West Point, IA).

Sophomore Brooke Duea (Earlham, IA) and freshmen Anna Kuckelman (Keokuk, IA) and Sarah Sosa (Ottumwa, IA) were named to the All-Academic second team.
